Influence
Empathy
Influence is about guiding others through respect, logic,
and empathy—not authority or manipulation. Leaders
influence through example, consistency, and emotional
intelligence.
Empathy is understanding without necessarily
agreeing. It’s about recognizing emotions and
responding thoughtfully. Empathy creates inclusive
teams and helps resolve conflict constructively.
To strengthen your influence:
Daily application:
Build trust through consistency
Listen more than you speak
Use logic, emotion, and shared goals to connect
Validate people’s experiences
Practice empathy
Lead with compassion
Courage
Respect
Leaders need the courage to do what’s right—not
what’s easy. That includes having tough conversations,
admitting mistakes, and standing firm under pressure.
Courage is contagious and builds trust across an
organization.
Courage in action:
Speak up, even when it’s uncomfortable
Address conflict directly
Defend your principles with humility
Resilience
Every leader will face failure. What defines
great leaders is how they respond.
Resilience means bouncing back stronger,
learning from setbacks, and modeling
strength under stress.
Build resilience by:
Framing failure as growth
Prioritizing mental health
Keeping purpose at the center
26
Respect is the foundation of every healthy
relationship. Respect for time, contributions,
and differences makes teams stronger. It’s
not just about being polite—it’s about
genuinely valuing others.
Ways to show respect:
Listen without interrupting
Follow through on commitments
Recognize different perspectives
Final Thought
Leadership isn’t about perfection—it’s about
consistency, integrity, and growth. Whether you're in
the field or the boardroom, embodying these traits will
help you instill vision, build structure, and—most
importantly—get important things done.
MENTORING is what leadership is all about, as our
future as land surveyors depends on our ability to
LEAD and MENTOR.
