SAFETY
Continual Learning
W. J. BREAUX,

CHAIR, TSPS SAFETY
COMMITTEE
Continual learning is critical for success in any
area of our lives — as an employee, leader,
community member, spouse, or parent. A
growth mindset is critical when it comes to a
separation of work for those who stay stagnant
in their position at work and those who land
better opportunities for themselves. Expanding
your knowledge at work will allow you to be a
more efficient and safer worker.
Having a fixed mindset will hold you back, and
it can lead to injuries on the job.
Dealing with change is inevitable, especially in
today’s world. Many have been in the same
field for 20 or more years. But think about how
different it was 10 years ago, especially in
surveying. If you cling to the past, you risk
being left behind. Your career will be left
behind, and you may also be more at risk of
injury.
As workplaces focus more on safety, many
businesses now use safer equipment and
follow improved work practices — like using
GPS instead of a total station to shoot not only
important things like property corners but to
shoot in topo shots, too. GPS reduces the
number of workers needed, replaces or
reduces the need for a total station in many
cases, and takes less time than a total station.
Mobile scanning represents an innovative
technology that allows quick coverage of large
project areas, sometimes with just one crew
member once control is established. While it
reduces time spent in the field, it requires
additional processing time back in the office.
However, there are factors to consider with
mobile scanning that aren't present in other
fieldwork methods.
If someone does not adapt to these changes,
they risk harm not only to themselves but also
to others.
Our workplaces and the nature of our work are continually changing. Advances in technology and new
methods for completing tasks mean that progress is happening at an unprecedented rate. It's essential for
employees to absorb and adapt to these updates to thrive in their roles. Any change, even for safety, can
impact your work, so it's vital to know its effects.
Whenever there are changes to processes, equipment, or tools for a particular job, it's important to
recognize any potential new hazards and determine how to address them. Workers who anticipate
challenges brought about by these changes — and develop effective solutions — play a vital role in
ensuring both safety and success at work.
To effectively integrate continual learning into our culture, we must consider these best
practices:
• Set clear learning objectives. Clearly define what you want to achieve through training
and learning. Regularly revisit these goals to assess progress.
• Utilize various learning formats. Different people learn in different ways. Incorporate a
mix of workshops, e-learning, hands-on training, and peer-led sessions to cater to
diverse learning styles.
• Recognize and reward learning efforts. Acknowledge employees who actively
participate in training and share knowledge with their peers. This motivates others to
engage in learning opportunities.
Hazards can arise, though, along with safety considerations. It is essential to remain
aware of this.
• Physical hazards. You must ensure that training environments are safe. When
conducting hands-on training with equipment, ensure that proper protective gear is
worn and the area is free of hazards.
• Psychological safety. Ensure an atmosphere that values contributions and
encourages employees to speak up about their learning needs or concerns without fear
of judgment.
Continual learning also involves understanding regulations. Compliance with OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) standards and other
regulatory bodies not only keeps us safe but also avoids potential legal issues. Regularly updating our knowledge of regulations ensures that we meet or exceed
compliance requirements. This protects both employees and the company.
Continual learning lies at the heart of effective health, safety, and environmental practices. By placing emphasis on advanced safety protocols and encouraging
transparent communication, we safeguard ourselves as well as our colleagues. Keep in mind that maintaining safety is a shared responsibility, and your
dedication to ongoing learning is essential for cultivating a safer work environment.
Adapt proactively to changes within the workplace. Most organizational adjustments are implemented to benefit everyone involved. While certain changes may
introduce increased risk, this is not common when employees respond appropriately and embrace new developments. Maintain a mindset that encourages
continuous learning rather than a fixed perspective. This approach not only enhances career opportunities but also contributes significantly to workplace safety.
Be safe.
