RECAP OF THE
NSPS STUDENT
COMPETITION
ello, I hope everyone is having a great 2025 so far! This
year has really 昀氀own by, and I cannot believe that we
are already into May. I had the privilege of attending
the YSN Spring Meeting and Student Competition in Washington D.C. in March. I had a wonderful time getting to network
with other surveying professionals around the nation. I wanted
to take this time to share my experience at the Student Competition as well as inform you on
what was discussed in the Spring
Business meeting on where YSN
is now and where it is headed.

stuck out to me highlighted the
growth of YSN. Just about six
years ago, only 8-10 people attended the YSN Spring Meeting,
compared to the Spring 2025
meeting which had a turnout
of 30 to 40 people with over
25 states represented! The past
and present leaders of YSN have
done a fantastic job creating a
solid foundation and promoting
YSN, making this growth possible. Our very own Cam Lowe
was appointed President of YSN
during the spring meeting. Cam
spoke brie昀氀y about what his vision is for YSN during his tenure which is mainly focused on
member bene昀椀ts. He introduced
us to the YSN Mentorship Program which will be rolling out
later this year, as well as the 昀椀rst
annual YSN Conference. The conference will be in conjunction
with the NSPS Fall Business meeting in Minneapolis Minnesota
this October.
To conclude, the YSN Student Competition was an amazing
experience, and I am already looking forward to helping with it
again next year! YSN is in a very good place. There has been an
amazing amount of growth in YSN and with exciting
things to come such as the Mentorship Program, and
the conference, YSN will continue to grow and gain

The Student Competition:
As mentioned before, I had the
opportunity to volunteer for the
NSPS YSN Student competition.
The competition consisted of two
days of activities, one day would
involve a monument hunt around Washington D.C. and the second day would involve
a series of stations that each team had to
complete in a timely manner. There were two
teams that represented Texas in the YSN Student Competition, Texas A&M Corpus Christi, and Klein Collins High School. Texas A&M
Corpus Christi competed in the bachelor’s
category and Klein Collins competed in the
associate’s category. I personally assisted Texas A&M Corpus Christi with the monument
hunt, where we explored the Washington
D.C. area to locate NGS monuments in and
around the city, as well as original boundary
stones marking the District’s borders. By the
end of the day, we had walked around 14 miles! On the second
day I assisted with the traverse station which consisted of teams
running a traverse by pulling chain and using a surveyor’s compass. Both teams from Texas did an amazing job in the student
competition. Klein Collins ended up coming back to Texas with
some hardware as they placed second in the associate’s category!
The Spring Meeting:
The YSN Business meeting focused on the vision
going forward for YSN as well as how far YSN
had come in the recent years. One discussion that
