STATE PLANE COORDINATE SYSTEM
MODERNIZED STATE PLANE
COORDINATE SYSTEM 2022 (SPCS
2022) IN THE STATE OF TEXAS
BY: Ibrahem Ali
ational Geodetic Survey (NGS) is
planning to roll out components
of the modernized National Spatial Reference System (NSRS 2022) over
time (2024 - 2026) [See Federal Register Notice on updated process for modernized NSRS
rollout,

Modernized State Plane Coordinate System
(SPCS 2022) will be referenced to the 2022
NSRS and the preliminary designs are now
available on the NGS alpha website (https://
alpha.ngs.noaa.gov/SPCS). For Texas, the
preliminary SPCS 2022 designs show that the
state has a total of 56 new zones, divided into
three zone layers as following:
N
1. Statewide Zone covers the
entire state.
1. Statewide Zone layer: 1 zone that covers
the entire state, see image (1) right.
2. Multi-Zone layer: 5 zones (North, North
Central, Central, South Central, and
South) which are updated and modernized and referenced to NSRS 2022, see
image (2) right.
3. Low Distortion Projection (LDP) layer:
50 map projection zones minimizing the
grid to ground distortions, see image (3)
right.
2. Multi-Zone layer: 5 zones
(North, North Central, Central,
South Central, and South)
which are updated and
modernized and referenced to
NSRS 2022.

2022, zones’ parameters and designs, please

As per the NGS (NGS is performing internal reviews and working with constituents
to 昀椀nalize the zone designs. These zones are
preliminary and should not be considered the
昀椀nal de昀椀nitions.).
