FEATURED MEMBER
chael Newton, and myself is something I have been proud to
participate in. The 2025 session will be the 15th year. I am also
proud to have been a speaker or organizer of the Symposium
since 2017 and a speaker at the Annual Convention in 2019,
2023, and 2024.
WHAT IS YOUR MOST MEMORABLE SURVEYING MOMENT?
In 1981 getting the Young Surveyor Award is a heck of a memory. Judy was 9 months pregnant and on bed rest with our second
child and she received a call from Tommie Anderson saying that
she had to get me to attend the 1981 Short Course in Fort Worth
without telling me why. She tried to talk me into going, but I
was not going to leave her with our 3-year-old daughter. She
asked my father for guidance on how to convince me to attend.
The Saturday morning of the convention, Dow Kelly, a co-worker and I left at 3:00 am, went to the convention for the Saturday
sessions, attended the Gala and I was honored to receive the
award. I got back home 24 hours later after the whirlwind of a
day. I’ll never forget receiving the Legend of the West award in
2009 from the Permian Basin Chapter. I have never more surprised and humbled as I was when I received the Surveyor of
the Year award and a Presidential Award in 2018 after chairing
the Standards Committee. These awards are what surveyors
strive to receive, and I am honored to have received each.
FAVORITES
Color: My favorite color is blue because I prefer to be outside in the wideopen sky.
Musician: My favorite music is country music, and my favorite singer is
George Strait, but I also enjoy music by Bob Wills.
Food: My favorite food is steak and banana pudding.
Animal: My favorite animal is a horse. I grew up riding horses in 4-H competitions, working on ranches gathering cattle and for fun.
Hobby: I do not really have a hobby except reading and family, but surveying is what I love. I do like to travel and hope to see all 50 states.
