Check your antifreeze level as part of your vehicle inspection. Read the chart on the antifreeze
container for the temperature range and make sure that your antifreeze is well within the lower
end of that range. Add antifreeze if necessary. Engine failure due to a lack of antifreeze is certainly
avoidable.
Don’t use cruise control on snowy, icy, or wet roads. It can react unexpectedly by speeding up
when your vehicle slips or slides. Turn it off in wet or icy conditions.
Bring a full emergency kit for winter travel. It is good to include the following: a blanket, water,
high-protein snacks, a first aid kit, an LED flasher, and a car battery jump starter. You never know
when you may need to rely on these items, even for an unexpected overnight stay during winter.
Make sure your fuel tank is always at least half full, which ensures you will have enough fuel to
keep warm if you end up stuck in traffic and waiting for an extended period. You will need plenty
of fuel to keep warm and to keep your battery charged for lights if conditions are cold.
Charge your cellphone and the cellphones of all passengers before leaving. This is important
whether traveling on interstate highways or back roads. Keep your location services on if you
