TIPS FOR DRIVING IN WINTER WEATHER
Walter J. Breaux, RPLS
TSPS Safety Committee
Winter is hard on drivers and vehicles. Driving in winter is especially difficult when the
weather is cold, wet, and icy. Parts of Texas rarely get cold, like the Valley, while other parts,
such as North Texas, get snow and ice on a regular basis during winter. Cold fronts are often
preceded by rain. Texas is a big state, and being prepared is essential for drivers during the
winter.
Driving in winter weather creates challenges that we must pay attention to. We must be
certain that our vehicles are winterized, and we must pay attention to weather forecasts. We
must understand winter weather challenges. Driving through sleet, snow, and ice is
dangerous. Quick starts and stops can be especially dangerous in snow and ice.
